When I studied illustration in college, my professors would always tell us, "If you want to work as an illustrator, develop your own style and always stick to it!" I didn't listen...

As you look through the pieces in this portfolio, you'll see the results of many different experiments using a variety of illustration styles, techniques, and tools – both traditional and digital, and often a blend of both. I look at each new project as an opportunity to create a whole new visual system.

I've created traditional illustrations using pencil, pen and ink, markers, watercolor, acrylic paint, and other natural media tools. Some of these pieces have a cartoony or comic book style while others are more realistic.

In the digital realm, I've created pieces in a flat, vector-y look using basic geometric shapes. Other digital illustrations have a varied line weight often used in animation. Some pieces have a more technical feel common in infographics or instructional illustrations. I've also used a graphics tablet at times in order to simulate a traditional feel.

In addition to illustration I've brought some pieces to life in both animation and through game design. Some of these are personal projects (animated videos for bands I've been in, original game concepts, etc.) while others were created for clients such as Dreamworks, Fox Searchlight, and the Family Values Tour.

“As a brand agency, we’re always looking for partners we can trust. Equally important is knowing that our partner views our project with the same level of professionalism and importance that we do. When we began working with Steve, we found a partner that exceeded all of our expectations, and we have been repeat clients ever since.”

“When we needed a design firm for our online campaigns for USA Today, Sports Weekly, and Charter Oak Partners, we went with Steve. His ability to visualize the concepts we’d developed allowed us to provide our clients with top-notch visuals, and the series of ads he designed for us won the Direct Marketing Association of Washington’s MAXI Award. Now that’s success.”

“Steve created a three-minute animation for our annual meeting. He took our initial ideas and turned them into an entertaining and effective presentation. He did a wonderful job, listening to our requests and incorporating them into the piece. His expertise was evident and we’d definitely work with Steve again.”

“I took over production of an online game for the Family Values Tour midway through its production. When I stepped in, Steve was in the process of programming the interactivity. He provided detailed and masterful explanations at every stage of development and gave me thoughtful advice when questions were raised by the end client, who was highly satisfied with the finished project. I hope to work with Steve again in the future.”

“We were looking for someone that not only understood how to create a compelling promotional spot, but who would take the time to understand our client's message and audience, as well as the ability tie into brand personality and sensibilities. Steve worked diligently to grasp the benefits of the solution, generating a fantastic and engaging visual for the client's website.”
